Celebrate National Dog Day by Reflecting on What Dogs Bring to Our Lives

Typically, our canine companions revel in the freedom and socialization of the dog park, where even the calmest pups tap into their innate wild spirit and exhaust themselves playing with furry friends in the open, secure green space. However, Rocky, our toy poodle, was a notable exception.

When we would take Rocky to the neighborhood dog park, he would simply stroll along the walkway, content but poised, almost as if he were headed to the local Starbucks for a latte and newspaper, rather than participating in the boisterous activities. His dignified and determined demeanor persisted throughout his nearly two decades of life, ultimately becoming a defining characteristic.

Sadly, this past February, at the age of 18, Rocky passed away, and our family lost a treasured companion. Caring for Rocky enriched our lives immeasurably, though not everyone understands the value and responsibility that comes with owning a pet.

National Dog Day serves as a poignant reminder of the immense joy and profound commitment involved in the human-canine bond. While an estimated 66% of U.S. households have pets, including 65.1 million dog owners, tragically, 3.1 million dogs enter shelters each year, often surrendered or abandoned by those who failed to appreciate the gift of their companionship.

Rocky himself was once one of those discarded dogs, having been returned when he was just eight months old. Despite his initial fears and challenges, he proved to be a beloved and resilient poodle, showcasing the intelligence, charm, and affection that make the breed so cherished. Though the loss of Rocky was heartbreaking, the time we shared with him was truly transformative for our family.
