Disney Plus Ends Run of The Acolyte After Inaugural Season

Lucasfilm has struck down prospects for more of "The Acolyte." The Disney+ series, starring Amandla Stenberg and created by Leslye Headland, won't return for a second season, "Good Morning America" has confirmed.

Disney+ has decided not to renew the Star Wars series The Acolyte for a second season, according to sources confirmed by IGN.

The news was first reported by Deadline, which stated that Disney has elected to not move forward with a second season of the show. Disney has not yet made an official announcement regarding the future of The Acolyte, and IGN has reached out to the company for comment.

While The Acolyte's viewership started strongly, drawing 11.1 million viewers in its first five days, the show's momentum reportedly waned over time. It fell out of Nielsen's weekly Top 10 streaming chart in its third week, though it did return to the 10 spot for its season finale.

The Acolyte wrapped up its eight-episode debut season on Disney+ in July, leaving the door open for potential future seasons. Showrunner Leslye Headland had previously discussed plans for "four or five major mysteries" she wanted to explore in a hypothetical second season.

However, the series, which was set during the High Republic era and followed a Jedi investigation, received mixed reviews from critics and fans. IGN's own review gave the first season a 6/10, citing "clumsy storytelling" despite the show's strong ideas for new directions in the Star Wars universe.

While The Acolyte won't be continuing, Disney+ still has a robust Star Wars programming slate, including the upcoming Skeleton Crew series premiering in December and the second season of Andor set to debut next year. Ahsoka Season 2 is also in development.
