USWNT Finishes Atop Group B After Edging Australia 2-1 at Paris Olympics

The U.S. women's national soccer team preserved its flawless run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, edging Australia 2-1 in both teams' final group stage match.

Once more, the USWNT seized the initiative from the opening whistle, probing Australia's defense through the middle and out wide to generate a bevy of scoring chances in the first half. It was a set piece that ultimately broke the deadlock, with Trinity Rodman pouncing on a redirected Sophia Smith delivery to put the Americans in front. The goal withstood a lengthy VAR review before being awarded.

The USWNT continued to control proceedings after the break, doubling its advantage in the 77th minute when substitute Korbin Albert unleashed an unstoppable strike from distance. Though Sophia Smith was unlucky not to add a third, with her shot ricocheting off the woodwork, the U.S. was made to sweat in the closing stages as Australia pulled a goal back deep in stoppage time.

Ultimately, the four-time Olympic champions held on to secure all three points and solidify their position atop Group B. Head coach Emma Hayes acknowledged her team remains a work in progress, but touted their ability to grind out results, saying, We're still building connections. Yes, got a bit hairy at the end, but I enjoyed it.

With the group stage complete, the USWNT now turns its attention to a quarterfinal clash against Japan on Saturday, August 3rd. Led by the formidable attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, and Trinity Rodman, the Americans will be favored to continue their quest for a fifth Olympic gold medal.
