BREAKING: Ismail Haniyeh the leader of the Hamas militant group has reportedly been killed in Iran

The news comes amid reports of dozens of casualties in the Gaza Strip

According to Hamas, their political chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a "treacherous Zionist raid" on his residence in Tehran, Iran. Iran's president has vowed to make Israel "regret this cowardly action," while Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei says avenging Haniyeh's killing is Tehran's duty.

Israel has not commented on the incident. The Israeli military says it is conducting a situational assessment.

This comes less than 24 hours after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed three people, including two children, and wounded 74 others. The Israeli military described this as a "targeted assassination operation" against a Hezbollah commander.

Additionally, Gaza officials report that 42 more bodies were retrieved from eastern Khan Younis, bringing the total Palestinian death toll to at least 255 during the nine-day Israeli army ground operation in the southern city.

Overall, the conflict has resulted in at least 39,445 killed and 91,073 wounded in Israel's war on Gaza. Hamas-led attacks on October 7 killed an estimated 1,139 people in Israel, with more than 200 taken captive.
