American swimmers Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff both earned medals for the United States in the women's 100m backstroke event at the Paris Olympics
Their podium finishes contributed to additional medal success for Team USA in this swimming discipline.
American tennis player Coco Gauff has provided a glimpse into what life is really like for athletes staying in the Olympic Village at the 2024 Paris Games. In a viral TikTok video, the 20-year-old Gauff revealed that she was sharing living quarters with 9 other athletes and had to share just 2 bathrooms between them all.
Gauff accompanied the video with overlaid text joking about the cramped and communal living situation, comparing it to the tense atmospheres depicted in movies like "Ready or Not," "Pearl," and "Hereditary."
While the Olympic organizers have since tried to address the issue, it has come at an additional cost. As a result, some of Gauff's fellow American tennis players have opted to move out of the Olympic Village and into a nearby hotel instead.
In the video's comments, Gauff noted that due to these changes, the number of athletes sharing her living space has now been reduced from 10 down to just 5.
On the court, Gauff has already notched some early success, winning a doubles match partnered with fellow American Jessica Pegula. They defeated the Australian duo of Ellen Perez and Daria Saville. Gauff has also won her opening round singles match, beating Ajla Tomljanović.
However, Gauff's Olympic run ultimately came to an end in the third round, where she was defeated by Wimbledon semifinalist Donna Vekic. The match featured a disputed call by the chair umpire Jaume Campistol, which led to Gauff becoming emotional and arguing with the official. This echoed a similar incident Gauff had experienced just two months prior at the French Open when she was defeated by eventual champion Iga Swiatek under controversial circumstances.
