Real Madrid Standout Poised to Claim African Player of the Year Award Over Lookman
Real Madrid's Brahim Diaz Poised to Capture African Player of the Year Honors Over Lookman
Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz is reportedly the frontrunner to be named the 2024 African Player of the Year, edging out Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman for the prestigious award.
Lookman enjoyed a strong campaign, helping Nigeria secure silver at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and netting a hat trick in the Europa League final to end Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten run. However, according to Spanish outlet Diarioas, the Moroccan international Diaz has emerged as the favorite to succeed Napoli's Victor Osimhen as Africa's top player.
Diaz, who switched his international allegiance from Spain to Morocco this year, has impressed at the club level with Real Madrid. Over the 2023-24 season, he scored 12 goals and provided 9 assists across all competitions, playing a key role as Real Madrid won the Champions League, La Liga, and Spanish Super Cup.
While Lookman will certainly be in contention for the award, Diaz's standout performances for the European champions appear to have given him the edge in the race to be crowned the 2024 African Player of the Year. The Moroccan international will compete with a host of other top African talents for the prestigious honor.
